Making the most of Christmas with your family

By bzbeth 04 Dec 2018

It's the most wonderful time of the year...

Especially now you have a bit of free time to spend with your family!

Yes, you may have to revise over the holidays (don't shoot the messenger!) but there will still be more than enough time to do fun things. Put aside the time you'd be in lectures or seminars for seeing your friends and family. So, if your Monday mornings are usually spent at university, keep this time free because you can now take the children out until lunchtime.

Here are some suggestions of other things you could do:

1. Explore a Christmas market

You're lucky to be in Wolverhampton because there are lots of Christmas events going on. Some of them are even running until Christmas Eve so you have plenty of time! You could head to the Givemas Fayre or check out the celebrations on Telford Campus. If you don't mind heading further out, Birmingham's Christmas market is an amazing day out too.

2. Do some baking

It's not often that you have this much free time to do some baking with your children or younger relatives so, why not make some festive? These gingerbread reindeers are pretty straightforward and will definitely get you in a Christmassy mood if you aren't already.

3. Meet Santa

It isn't Christmas until you've spotted St. Nick! You might have seen him in shopping centres and garden centres but for the full experience, and to make a day of it, head to SEALiFE in Birmingham. Meeting Santa is included in your entry fee so after you've wandered around the centre, go meet him and even get a free pressie for the kids. You will need to pre-book your tickets through on the SEALiFE website - booking in advance saves money too!

4. Get creative

If you want to watch how much you're spending; a crafts day at home is something that EVERYONE will enjoy. Try to think outside of the box and do something that will really involve the children - this will probably mean getting messy! Make lollypop stick Christmas tree decorations, handprinted reindeer or pipe cleaner candy canes. Whatever you decide to make, it won't cost much and it's loads of fun.

5. Take a Santa boat trip

Christmas is all about the experience and making amazing memories with your friends and family and what better way to do this than a festive boat ride? The Dudley Canal & Tunnel Trust has created Christmas Candyland - a magical illuminated trip with a show and of course, FREE presents for all the children. Places are limited so you'll need to book in advance to avoid any disappointment. Who needs Lapland? Not you!

Holidays from university don't come around that often so make the most of these opportunities when you can to make some amazing memories with your friends and family.

Merry Christmas from everyone at the University of Wolverhampton!
