Best ways to celebrate Black History Month

By bzbeth 02 Oct 2018

For those of you who know (or don't know), Black History Month is upon us!

There are lots of different ways you can get involved and make the most of this month that only comes around once a year:

1. Join your ACS

Most universities have an ACS - African and Caribbean Society. It's perfect if you're from that background but this isn't to say that others can't join too. Everybody is welcome to ACS! Societies may be running events that you can get involved in; this could just be discussions about Black History Month and what it means. You could incorporate BHM to any society you're part of whether it's debate, LGBTQ+ or dance.

2. Eat some Afro-Caribbean food

Who doesn’t love food? I know I do! This is one for my fellow foodies - now is your chance to try different food. You could ask your African or Caribbean friends to teach you recipes, you could plan a cookout or your ACS might be selling food on campus. Either way, you need to try jollof rice, rice & peas, jerk chicken, fried plantain and more!

3. Listen to music / Throw a party

Now is the time to make a playlist of your favourite R&B, hip-hop, grime and soul songs together and invite some people round to yours. You could even listen to new genres like Afrobeats, Dancehall or Tanzian to educate yourself. I did this last year to connect with my heritage but with other cultures too. Either way, it's time for you and your friends to turn up!

4. Educate, educate, educate

This could be educating yourself OR other but either way BHM is a celebration for everybody. You don't have to be of Afro-Caribbean heritage to be aware of it! If you’re one of those people that is aware of BHM and what it's all about, why not pass that knowledge to others? Education is the only way to rid hate/ignorance and spread positivity and personally, I think this the best way to celebrate BHM.

Those are my suggestions, I wonder what you'll get up to...

Check out events in Wolverhampton or even on campus that you could get involved to celebrate Black History Month.
